Peter Jones (January 1, – J ) was an Ojibwe Methodist minister, translator, chief and author from Burlington Heights, Upper Ojibwa name was Kahkewāquonāby (Gakiiwegwanebi in the Fiero spelling), which means "[Sacred] Waving Feathers".In Mohawk, he was called Desagondensta, meaning "he stands people on their feet".In his youth his band of Mississaugas had Born: January 1, , Burlington Heights, Upper Canada. His papers in the Peter Jones collection at Victoria University Library (Toronto) include his manuscript for History of the Ojebway Indians, his personal notebook (entitled the “Anecdote book”), and his diaries for –28, as well as incoming and outgoing correspondence, including a volume of letters written to .

In this work, the translator, Mr. George Johnston, of Sault Ste Marie, has used the English alphabet in its ordinary and natural manner, as known to English readers. It embraces besides the daily morning and evening services, the commandments, and a selection of hymns, and is used at the Griswold Mission in Western Michigan. The title page of Tracts in the Chipeway and English, published in , also includes the title in both English and Ojibwe. Neither indicates the translator. The edition of Collection of Hymns for the Use of Native Christians of the Chipeway Tongue contains two title pages that face one another.

The book was printed in Sarnia at the office of the Sarnia Canadian on April 1st, Huron Library’s copy is the third edition, and is printed in both English and Ojibway.
